Description
The earliest visuals created for Thanner Kuhai (The Water Cave). The lighting and textures were originally warmer in colour but in order to optimise for VR many of the reflections, complex textures and wetness effects had to be pulled back. The original idea was also to have the character (a silhouette) make progress through the cave in front of the reader/player, however the formations of the tunnels and the rocks made this virtually impossible to achieve effectively without a wide range of climbing, walking and swimming animations. Volumetric light was also used in early iterations but again dropped for ‘global fog’ to ensure smooth playback in VR.

The overall colourscheme of the work transformed 4-5 times before a greenish/white tint was settled on. The final texture used on the rocks throughout the cave was taken from a high resolution scan of a gravestone.
