Description

Thanner Kuhai or “The Water Cave” is the first work of electronic literature to be created in both English and Tamil. An immersive experience for PC and Virtual Reality, the project developed over the course of around 2 years and changed appearance several times. This footage and these images are from the original prototype. As with many Dreaming Methods projects, the text was written spontaneously into the environment of the piece during its development. It was continuously revised until first release, after which it was extracted into Word documents and converted to PDFs. Note that the Tamil translation by Shanmugapriya T has different meanings to the English original by Andy Campbell.

Thanner Kuhai underwent many different visual transformations during its lengthy development history. The project was entirely created in fractions of spare time (with no funding or backing) and provided a platform/focus for Dreaming Methods to develop techniques for tethered VR (the piece was made before the availability of the Oculus Quest or other standalone headsets.) Another trailer with a more yellow/green palette is available to view here.
